This is only true in the First Past The Post voting system, where if someone gets a majority they get the most power. Alternative voting means you can choose a 2nd or 3rd favourite, and if your favourite doesn't win, your vote counts to the 2nd favourite, and if that loses it will count to the 3rd.
The will of the majority is not necessarily what is best for the country. Perhaps it takes a sole professional, who is educated from an early age (i.e. a hereditary monarch) on what is best for the country would be supreme.
we are giving choices to human beings, who make mistakes and are not always rational.
Democracy is, economically and morally speaking, inferior to the systems of monarchy and aristocracy that existed before it.
