They probably have more advanced tech. than us (Check Fermi Paradox. There are not enough characters I can't explain it).
Also, according to Carl Sagan; that high tech. civilization is probably lack of anger, revenge and violence.

It is dangerous to have physical contact because there will be diseases on other planets but finding aliens is good the species of both our worlds can leave each other alone. So we do not wipe each other out with diseases.

Earth likely doesn't have enough resources for aliens to bother claiming. Other resources are probably much easier to obtain literally anywhere else.

An alien species capable of becoming space-faring, has likely evolved and survived for a very long time.
Species that survive must, from time to time, wage war.
If there are multiple alien species, then while some alien may be benevolent, there are bound to be those that are malevolent.
Almost any credible values the Aliens could have would make them want to destroy all life on earth. And these values are probably different than most human values.
The argument is probably about trying to contact Aliens. (and so giving our location). Not just trying to know if Aliens exist.
they're scary
Morals and working together ensured the survival of humans, so why would aliens not have any morals? You cannot assume that aliens will not have morals.
If Aliens are similar to us. They too have bad actors and a culture which endorses war for gain.
If aliens are not similar to us they could disrupt our way of life to the point of changing what human society is. This could be a good thing but it could also be worse than what we have now.
Detecting an advanced alien civilization would increase our understanding of what technologies are feasibly possible and help guide our own scientific development.
If aliens want to kill us we don't have the technology to defend ourselves
