Matlab is not a programmer's language, it's a mathematician's language. It is altered for those who aren't as familiar with programming to make it easy to run complex mathematical problems. But to those who do know programming, there are usually better languages to use.

Object-oriented approach is usually useless for so-called "scientific computations".
"Scientific computations" is a very general term, and include huge ranges of applications which are decidedly scientific and would benefit enormously from OO. One example of this is engineering simulation.
MATLAB has libraries relevant to many disciplines so the programmer can focus on code directly relevant to the project.
