We should wait until GitLab Inc. open sources Gitter in June 2017, as that will allow fixes to current incompatibilities between Gitter and GitLab which are hurting adoption.
GitHub is not open source, GitLab is. As an open source project, we should favor the open one.

We already are having a lot of stars on GitHub and lot of newcomers find working with GitHub already challenging, I think we should encourage them learning to use GitHub, since that'll be helpful to them in many other projects as well, since it is more popular.
While I like GitLab's UI, it's just too slow for me. Github is snappy.
