If your goal is simply to convince someone then a lie may take you there. However if your goal is to be right, then you may still very well be wrong. You just make the other belive you are right. For a while.
Not if it is simply to "win" an argument. If a lie is used to support an argument in an effort to protect from harm(physical, psychological, etc.), I can see how it would be beneficial. One should be open to their views/opinions changing in light of new information or misinformation toward "truth"
