It is currently not the language of choice for server side development, It's high usage is a result of legacy code that is too costly to rewrite. Few new projects are utilizing it.

Scala presents a much stronger core language, is able to use JVM libraries and make use of existing Java code and is more "fun" to write than Java. Additionally, it can target JS, and soon Scala-Native will target LLVM. All of this without having to rewrite existing Java projects.
