Bilingualism has been shown to increase creativity, problem solving ability, ability to see situations from different perspectives, and ability to identify linguistic problems in either language known. It has also been correlated with delayed onset of dementia and Alzheimer's.
The time given to secondary languages in classes could be given to something else more useful and helpful. Although it is not time being wasted, it is not being spent as good as it could be.
The time could be used to learn more relevant life skills directly and more efficiently. These other subjects could be modeled so that the implicit benefits of learning languages is still maintained.
