ESLint doesn't have a preference for any particular semicolon style. By default it doesn't lint semicolon usage, and the option to lint semicolons allows to enforce both semicolon and semicolon-less style.
Not using semicolons helps avoid bugs related to inserting semicolons in places where they don't belong. For instance, if (condition); f(); will always call function `f` ignoring the condition.
