Development costs money and free software has been shown to not be a viable model for game development (because few designers believe in the principle).
The factorio devs told is it's ok to give the DRM free version to you. You'd still have to buy the game for updates but we can make coala games happen without financial investments to not exclude anyone.
The latency from india will probably be too high. We could get a server somewhere in between maybe. Update: Vienna Bangalore is almost 200ms and there is nothing in between :/
Latency is largely dependent on the network connection you have. For example, my internet connection has a ping of few tens of milliseconds consistently when I play Age of Empires II against people all over the world. (I'm from India :P)
